Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, ADC, PC was famous for his glorious moustache which he grew after losing a bet with the Duke of Cambridge in the officer's mess one night. Kitchener went on to fight many of Queen Victoria's little wars, winning one after the other but Kitchener was forced to live in the shadow of his 'tache' which was immensely popular with the British public - so much so that when Kitchener was lost at sea in 1916 (his ship was sunk by a German U-boat) the British people donated thousands of pounds to the moustache recovery effort. The sad truth is that neither man or moustache were found however a Kitchener's moustache shaped object washed up on beach in Scotland in 1923. At the time, the object was described as 'very 'tachey' and 'quite Kitcheny" and in 1924 it was declared the 'one true moustache' and given it's own state funeral.
