It's Not About You Tee

Australia 2014 - Our PM (Prime Moron) Tony Abbott says he is confronted by the Burka and bans them in parliament then does a backflip when he realises that he looks like a dick with many commentators saying that they find the sight of a a middle aged man wearing red budgie smugglers confronting but nobody is calling to ban them. (I have added an image of a pair of 'budgie smugglers' at the bottom of this post for anyone who doesn't know what they are)

Regardless, the debate rages in Australia despite the fact that very few people actually wear a Burka. The Burka is the garment which covers the whole face including the eyes and is mostly worn by Afghan women. More common is the Niqab which is similar but of course 'Ban the Niqab' doesn't roll from bogan tongues so easily.

The arguments on social media are facile with comments such as "when we go to their country, we have to cover up" and "the Burka is a symbol of male oppression."

The first comment is interesting: leaving aside the fact that we are talking about Australian Muslims and 'their country' is Australia, I doubt that anyone who made this comment have visited a Muslim country other than Indonesia (Australians love Bali but not many realise it's in Indonesia) and from my experience, very few westerners 'cover up' on Bali - in fact they seem to wear less than they would back home. The second comment is trotted out to show how oppressed Muslim women are. Such sentiments are awfully nice, and it's lovely to think that bigots have such concern for the rights of Muslim women but not their right to wear whatever they want.

What this all amounts to is self described 'freedom loving Australians' trying to make the country more free by banning things.Twisted logic indeed.

My view? The decision to wear a head covering - Burka, Niqab, Hijab or nun's Habit has absolutely nothing to do with me because I don't wear one. That decision is made between the individual and their God and should not be made by governments or influenced by bigots.

There are two designs here, one for Hijabi which says 'Confronted by my hijab - well it's not about you' and the other is designed for people who don't wear the Hijab but would like to show there support 'Confronted by the hijab - well it's not about you'

Boundless Plains To Share Tee

I've just sold one of my favourite designs.
For those that don't know, the words 'we've boundless plains to share' features in the Australian national anthem which was written in a time when Australia was young and outward looking - sadly we seem to have regressed over the last twenty years.

Mr Abbott - Why Should We Believe You Tee

For those that don't know, Australia's coalition federal government was elected on the strength of three word slogans and one of the most frequently used was 'stop the boats.'

This particular little gem appeals to many Australian's who worry that  brown skinned people will either steal their jobs* or their carpark at the suburban shopping centre and was vomited up by Liberal and National party candidates at every opportunity.

Having won the election the coalition gave their immigration policies an important, military,  sounding name (Operation Sovereign Borders) and proceeded to veil it in a cloak of secrecy that would put many fascist dictatorships to shame.

The immigration minister, Scott Morrison, has taken to answering every question with 'we do not comment on operational matters' and it seems to roll so easily and often from his tongue that I wonder if he has actually said anything else since coming to office. (I have disturbing visions of Scott Morrison's wife asking him what he would like for breakfast and him answering 'we do not comment on operational matters' but that's nothing compared to election time when I thought Tony Abbott would cry 'stop the boats' during sex)

My point is that, regardless of your position on refugees and asylum seekers, whether you think there should be more or less or whatever, every Australian should be very concerned that this government (the employee) has stopped communicating with the public (it's employer) because government secrecy is not consistent with the aspirations of an open democracy.

So the next time the minister or some other government hack or LNP troll tells you that there have been no boat arrivals since January ask them to prove it, better still tell them that you've heard   there have been ten boat arrivals since January and when they tell you you're wrong, ask them to prove it - then sit back and watch their argument implode because they can't.

*I would suggest that if you think you are in danger of losing your job to a poor person from another country who has few contacts, very little support and may not even speak English, you should think about getting another job or try a bit harder.

Stop The Boats Tee

If I hear the slogan for bogans, 'stop the boats' one more time I'll probably explode but imagine if Australia's current immigration policy was in place 200 years ago.

Hide The Boats Tee

As the Italian immigrant Nino Culotta (John O'Grady) said about Australians - They're a weird mob. On the one hand, the sentiment 'for those who've come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share' appears in the second verse of our national anthem but in reality, something very strange happens to Australians when they hear the words 'asylum seeker' and some start to froth at the mouth at the mere mention of 'boat arrivals'

We just don't seem to understand that we are not being overrun by refugees and even if we were, we would still have a moral, not to mention, legal obligation to provide help to people asking for help.

For those that don't know, the current Australian government was elected on the strength of three word slogans and, given that directly after winning government they announced that the 'adults were back in charge' one can only presume that they believe we 'children' would struggle to comprehend detailed policy but I digress - one of those three word slogans was 'stop the boats' repeated often and at every opportunity, over and over again until the Liberal candidates started to resemble the robot from Lost in Space, yelling 'warning, warning' and waving their arms around a lot.

(Funnily enough this comparison with robots became true - when one Liberal candidate was asked for details of what the policy involved in the lead up to the poll, he answered 'well er... um... er... we're going to stop the boats yep, stop the boats, that's what we're going to do we're going to stop the boats' and was unable to explain his party's policy beyond the three word slogan.)

So our new government set up an important sounding quasi-military operation called 'Operation Sovereign Borders' which was tasked with 'stopping the boats' They bought some expensive lifeboats and told us they would tow boats back to sea but that is where the communication from our government ended and questions about 'Operation Sovereign Borders' are invariably met with the phrase 'we do not comment on operational matters'

So a few weeks ago when two asylum seeker' boats entered Australian waters and made contact with both the government and refugee advocates, we were treated to a performance  from our Immigration Minister (Scott Morrison) that would put Basil Fawlty to shame. Firstly they denied there were any boats, then they told us that they do not comment on 'on water incidents'  then they handed the people from one of the boats to the Sri Lankan navy (the very people they were seeking asylum from)

The people on the other boat are now being held on an Australian vessel, somewhere on the Indian Ocean, without representation, until Australia's (independent) High Court decides whether the government is acting legally and still the government sees fit to withhold information from it's citizens.

'Stop the boats' has become 'hide the boats'

And the reason for all this bastardry?
This government is so twisted that they think because they made such a big deal of 'stop the boats' the people that voted for them will not forgive them if even one asylum seeker boat makes it to Australia - by their own measure they will have failed.
I say people's lives and human rights are more important than three word slogans.

Tony Abbott Will Be Judged For His Actions Tee

150 Asylum seekers from Sri Lanka are  STILL being held on an Australian vessel, somewhere in the Indian Ocean and the government refuses to provide information to the Australian public. Secrecy is the tool of dictators Mr. Abbott.

Disappeared Tees (or 'That's Some Soviet Shit Right There')

The Australian government has taken to 'disappearing' people in the name of protecting Australia's borders from asylum seekers arriving by boat. Much has been written about this over the last few weeks but some of the best and most sensible commentary can be found on the Heathen Scripture Facebook page and I reproduce one of his status updates below  but I encourage you to read the follow up to this post on his blog which you can find here.

That's some Soviet shit right there.
