In October 2012, 15 year old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban because she dared to want an education.
On her 16th birthday (12th of July 2013 - Malala day) she delivered a speech to the UN in which she outlined the most simple way to defeat the Taliban and terrorism - education. Simplicity confuses people so I have no doubt that the war against terror will continue to be fought with bombs and drones.
Malala is determined, strong and tenacious and eloquent but perhaps more importantly, she is extraordinarily intelligent and passionate about changing the world, or at least her part of it.
I wish that I had the courage of her convictions.
In a world where football players, reality TV contestants and people who can sing and dance a bit, are held up by our media as heroes, perhaps it's time to look around for some new role models for our children.
