Joan of Arc or Jeanne d'Arc , as she liked to be called in French, was mucking out the stables one day when God came down and told her that He had chosen her to go and pick a fight with England. Why He chose a cross dressing, peasant girl from Domrémy in Eastern France and what he had against England is unclear but they do say He works in mysterious ways. It is equally unclear why the French King Charles the VII sent her off to help raise the siege of Orleans but I guess the English had been giving the French merry hell for a few years and he thought it wouldn’t hurt to let a teenage girl take charge of the army – come to think of it, if she was anything like a typical 21st century teenage girl, she was probably an inspired choice. Anyway, things went swimmingly, she showed the French army how to fight and they started winning for a while. Jeanne helped them lift the siege of Orleans and to take the Burgundian held city of Rheims. She had a bit of a knack for lifting sieges so she went off to help the city of Compiègne but was captured by the Burgundians after attacking their camp. Duke Philip of Burgundy sold her to the English who were still a bit angry with her – actually they must have been really angry with her because they tried her for heresy and burnt her at the stake and I’m sure that there is a lesson to be learned there.

King George III is largely remembered for those periods when he lost his mind due to the 1994 movie 'The Madness of King George' starring the delightful Helen Mirren as Queen Charlotte (she really needs to be careful or she will be typecast) Actually, King George never saw the movie, cinema wasn't around back then, but I'm convinced that he wouldn't have liked it. Anyway, he probably wasn't as mad as everyone says - boffins have tested a sample of the King’s hair and found that it contains over 300 times the toxic level of arsenic. King George's bizarre behaviour and wild outbursts were treated as insanity, the poor bugger was bound in a straitjacket and chained to a chair to control his ravings. King George was officially mad (by the standards of the time) but then, in the 1970's, a new and controversial diagnosis was made. Two psychiatrists looked over the king's medical records and noticed a key symptom; dark red urine - a classic and unmistakable sign of a rare blood disorder called porphyria which can cause severe abdominal pain, cramps, and even seizure-like epileptic fits. Porphyria attacks can be triggered by a wide range of substances - alcohol, common medication, even monthly hormones and possibly arsenic. The most common medication he was given was James' powders, a routine medicine he was being given several times a day - made of a substance called antimony and antimony, even when purified, contains significant traces of arsenic. The arsenic from the very medication he was being given to control his "madness" was triggering more attacks and his porphyric attacks had been brought on after a lifetime's arsenic accumulated in his body, and then were made much more prolonged and more severe by the medicine to treat him. Of course when he died, his son, the Prince Regent became King George IV and he really was as mad as a box of frogs (and most likely addicted to laudanum)

In France the humble bee is a symbol of immortality and resurrection and they are considered one of the oldest symbols of the sovereigns of France. Napoleon chose bees as a symbol to link his empire with the very origins of France. If you are a Francophile, wearing this design on an apron will make your crepes taste better (not guaranteed) and if you wear it on a t-shirt you will be more sophisticated, your Beaujolais will be fruitier and your Gruyere sweeter (again, not guaranteed) If you are English, this design is also available on a dartboard.
